ok, so derek and i had this fun evening planned. we were going to go see 'ironman' at the greene and have dinner at potbelly beforehand.
so we picked up our tickets for 'ironman' and walked to potbelly...derek got an italian sandwich, i got my usual, the turkey on wheat.
about 3/4 of the way through my sandwich, my tongue hurt. so i tried reaching in my mouth to pull out ... well, who knows what. not sure what i thought was hurting my tongue, but when i found it, i discovered it wasn't just floating around my mouth. it was stuck in my tongue.
derek looked at me funny as i kept reaching in my mouth while also trying to delicately chew and swallow the food in my mouth. i moved to his side of the table and said i had something stuck in my tongue, could he get it out please. well, he found it, and tried to pull it out, but it wouldn't budge. so he went and got the manager, they refunded our dinner, and took our name and address for insurance purposes.
then he ran back to the parking garage on the other side of the greene and stopped in the movie theatre to get a refund for our tickets ('i have to take my wife to the ER, can i get a refund please?'). and off we went to the ER.
we went to the new emergency center that's a half mile from our condo. man, it's nice in there. it's like an upscale hotel lobby rather than an ER waiting room, and derek made a comment how odd someone might feel with a finger half severed by a table saw, waiting there in the leather chairs with blood dripping from a rag on his hand. nice, derek. but he's right, it's way too upscale for bloody emergencies.
anyway, they took us back to triage, got all my info up to date and the physician's assistant came in and pulled the thing out of my tongue. it's about 3/8ths of an inch long in total, and about half of it was stuck in my tongue. it looked kind of like a thorn, and was sharp as a needle on the end that impaled me. anyway, we saved it for the people at potbelly. i'll probably take a picture of it too.
so then all the nurses came in to see what they pulled out of my tongue, and the triage nurse who checked me in made some comments that when they called back to let them know there was a patient waiting in the lobby, they all freaked out because they heard i was pregnant and they were nervous i was in labor or something. don't i wish. apparently, me being pregnant got us the biggest, nicest room in the ER, and lots of extra attention.
we were only there about an hour all total, and, you know, it was nice to see the new facility. i'd rather not have had my tongue impaled, but what're you gonna do. so now we wait for the ER bill and take it to potbelly so they can pay us...and maybe give us some gift certificates or something, because, i do love potbelly. and even if i can't bring myself to eat their sandwiches for a while, they have great shakes and cookies. mmmm....ice cream.

Frank said it was probably the serrated edge of a knife.
oh, nice. :)
actually, it did appear to be some sort of stem or piece of wood.
Unbelievable! What a strange and surreal story!
